Aerocrine AB announced that a group of prominent clinicians and researchers, all leaders in the field of asthma in the US, has issued a consensus paper recommending that inflammation monitoring using exhaled nitric oxide should be part of the routine clinical management of asthma in conjunction with other conventional methods. The points of clinical consensus were arrived at during a closed meeting held at National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado.

The National University of Singapore researchers have discovered a new way to take an electrocardiogram (ECG) of the heart – with a T-shirt. The garment, which has the technology sewn into it, will help doctors monitor those who have recently undergone heart surgery and patients with irregular heartbeats. The team is also looking at modifying the T-shirt ECG monitoring system to help asthma patients.

A new study conducted by a team led by Rob McConnell, professor at the University of Southern California (USC), indicated that children of stressed parents are more likely to develop asthma triggered by air pollution. Researchers found that stress and low parental education were also linked with larger effects of exposure to tobacco smoke during pregnancy.

U.K.-based Argenta Discovery has begun the phase II trial of ADC4022 for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and steroid-insensitive asthma. The trial will study the effect of inhaled ADC4022 and an inhaled corticosteroid on markers of inflammation and pulmonary function over four weeks. The study is going to be multicenter, randomized, double blind and placebo-controlled.
